The FACTS About:
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is an enlargement of main artery in the abdomen. As the aorta enlarges, the walls of the vessel become weakened and thin, which can lead to rupture of this vessel. The abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the abdomen. It is the main artery coming off of the heart and supplying blood flow to the body. The most common area for this weakness to occur is in the abdomen below the kidneys and above the area where the aorta divides to supply blood flow to the legs. If an AAA ruptures, it is fatal 80% of the time.
There is usually no warning sign of an AAA – until it actually bursts.
The FACTS About:
Stroke and Carotid Artery Disease
Stroke occurs when a blood vessel feeding the brain bursts or is clogged, causing a sudden disruption in the blood flow to the brain. It is the third leading killer in the U.S. Carotid artery disease is the leading cause of strokes. More than 50% of stroke victims present no warning signs. After the age of 55, the risk of stroke doubles every 10 years. Most significantly, 97% of the adult population cannot name a single warning sign of a stroke.
The FACTS About:
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PAD)
This narrowing of the blood vessels in the legs is caused by the buildup of fatty plaque and is a strong predictor of heart disease. Many people experience discomfort while walking that is relieved by rest, but are unaware that it is due to blocked arteries. Approximately 12 million Americans suffer from PAD, often referred to as hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis. It is 4 to 5 times more likely that you will die from heart disease if you have peripheral arterial disease.
Family Health Care of Siouxland offers comprehensive screening exams for stroke, aneurysms, and leg circulation.
Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening
This ultrasound screening examines the arteries in the neck to detect any narrowing of the vessel.
$40.00
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening
This screening exam uses ultrasound to detect a dilation (aneurysm) of the main blood vessel in the abdomen (aorta). * This screening requires fasting for 6 hours prior to the exam.
$40.00
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screening
The PAD screening test is a painless exam performed by comparing the blood pressure in the ankles to the arms and listening to the blood flow throughout these vessels.
