This year’s Diabetes Wellness Fair was a huge success with over 450 people attending. We had a wonderful time meeting everyone and hearing their stories. Here are just a few that moved us.
A woman stopped by and told us that she had attended the Diabetes Wellness Fair last year & took advantage of the free health screenings. Of course we were excited that she came last year & was back this year, but what she said next astounded us. Due to the carotid screening a lump was found on her thyroid. Although she was displaying no symptoms, the lump was determined to be thyroid cancer. This story alone makes the Diabetes Wellness Fair a success in our eyes.
Another attendee from last year told us that they had received the free health screening & found out that they had a 90% blockage. Since this was a very serious discovery the patient contacted their doctor & was in surgery within the week. Wow!
This story really pulled at our heartstrings. A mother of an 18-month-old who was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes attended the Diabetes Wellness Fair with her son’s daycare provider. This special daycare provider noticed that the little guy was drinking a lot and seemed lethargic during the day. Anyone who has been around one knows, lethargic, is not a word that usually describes an 18 month old. Anyway, we thought it was such a fantastic idea for the daycare provider to attend with the boys mother, so he is sure to receive the best possible care, 24 hours a day. Although her son’s recent diagnosis was a lot to take in, the mother was so grateful to have this event & all of its resources. We wish her luck and hope to see her and her son at next year’s Diabetes Wellness Fair.
